When anchored in Sprout Island cove and the "Toad Hall" came in to the bay for a night, Capt. Terry and the owner went over to visit. Capt. Duane recommended places to go that he and his wife Jeannie thought were good anchorages and moorage places. One of the places was Jennis Bay inside Duruy Inlet 9 miles west of Sullivan Bay. The owner tells Capt. Terry that is to be "The Ringleaders" next destination.
Capt. Terry figures out that the bottleneck in this destination is Stuart narrows 25 knt miles from Echo Bay, and it needs to passed through at 4:53pm when the water will be at high slack.
Departing Echo Bay at 1PM " The Ringleader" reaches Stuart Narrows a half of an hour before slack and receives a little push through the narrows, and is secured at the Jennis Bay Marina by 5:10PM

Echo Bay has 2 marinas "The Ringleader" Moored at Carol and Jerry's Marina called The Windsong Sea Village. It is across the small bay from The Echo Bay Marina, that was going through a change of ownership and management at that time.
it also had a fuel dock and store, although the store was open the fuel dock was not.
Less than a mile south of the store on the entrance point was a museum, run by a local fisherman Bill Proctor that had filled up a small cabin with things he has collected from the sea ,woods and Islands, that you can visit. Bill accepts donations ($), and has stories to tell, and T-Shirts , books and Art pieces to sell that you can buy as treasures, gifts, or mementos.
Back at the marina we are invited to dinner on the dock, potluck, by Carol, with other marina guest.

just a little more than 12 knots miles from Pierre's Cove marina. When arrived at Kwatsi Bay it is full, so
reservations are made for the following day, and "The Ringleader" motors across Tribune channel, around clam point, and back into Wakkanna Bay and anchored in 70' of water with 280' of anchor rode out.

The owner hears tell of a pig roast that happens on Saturdays at Pierrie's Cove Marina, located about 18 knt miles SW of Sullivan Bay, off the NW corner of Gilford Island. She mentions it to Capt. Terry,

Two hours and a half later, "The Ringleader", Owner and Capt. Terry are moored at Pierre's Cove Marina, with reservations for the "Pig Roast" and the Rubber Ducky race, to take place the next day on Saturday.

After dinner at the Greenway Sound restaurant and a couple days at the dock, Capt. Terry and the owner cruise to Sullivan on North Broughton Island where the largest facilities this side of the Queen Charlotte Straits exist. Soon after tying up the "Eviva" arrives, one of the largest Yachts cruising the area. Orin, and Charlene, the owners, are aboard, and Capt. Terry learns from Orin that he is taking it down island, to put it, on a Dockwise transfer vessel to be shipped to Florida for a boat show.

Fog in the morning. The owner picks Greenway Sound for destination of the day.Capt. Terry has been going over all the charts and cruise books, between crabbing, fishing and cooking catches, and has calculated the distance to Greenway Sound from Sprout Is. Cove. That being 35ktm around the north side of through Wells Passage or 31 ktm around the south side through Fife Sound.
The fog partially lifts and "The Ringleader" pulls anchor and gets underway, Capt. Terry wanting to go the longer route through Wells Passage, but as they cross Blackfish Sound the fog lowers again and the southern route through Fife Sound is chosen to avoid the thicken fob bank laying over the straight.
The wind id light to none, along the way they encounter the boat "Countess" owned by an acquaintance of Capt. Terry that 25 years ago had purchased plans from of a 70 ft sail boat.Waves were exchange, they were fishing but had not caught any.
Green way Sound Marina was contacted, moorage arranged, and "The Ringleader" Tied up to the shoreside dock.

The owner helps Capt. Terry replacing the navigation lights. Then they depart from Alert bay to anchor somewhere around Hansen Island about 12 to 14 miles away.
Departing Alert Bay Cormorant island is keep on the boats starboard side along with the Pearse islands, then across Weynton Passage into Blackfish Sound, where Hanson island lies between it an Johnstone Strait. They look into Double Bay where a logging operation and fish camp were. Did not like it so went around thee point and anchored behind a small Island named Sprout Island, where they anchored, and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

The day is spent with Capt.Terry finding replacement lights, for the
navigation lights that all burned out for a unknown reason,
filling water tanks, washing down the complete boat, shining the stainless,
vaccuming inside,and gereral clean up. After clean up when the owner was
into her quiet time he went for a walk around town to find a Native first
Nation museum, totem poles, one claimed to be the tallest totem pole in the
world.

The "Ringleaders" next destination is the northern entrance of Johnston straits. Telegraph Harbor is 25 kn mi from Pt Harvey anchorage and Alert Bay about 30 kn mi.
After the fog lift in the harbor and the straight, "Ringleader pulls up anchor and head Northwest out the Straights, to find Telegraph Cove full, but moorage available at Alert bay 5 miles further north. They proceed there and secure "Ringleader" with power and water.

Anchored in a cove near Tuna Point, located about half way through Johnstone Strait, on the northern side of Sunderland channel. Captain Terry confers with the owner, about where she would like to go. She explains to him that when possible she would like to have the boat placed and connected to moorage, or securely anchored by mid after noon, when she would like to retire to her stateroom suite, for 2-3hrs.
After knowing this Captain recommends they go to Port Harvey, and anchor for the evening, a good anchorage that Captain Terry Had used over a dozen years before when he captained the 70' M/Y "Staccato" for Bill& Marylou, and look into a couple other coves that might be used for moorage or anchorage at a later time, if needed.
The Owner agrees, engine checks are made, then started, the anchor raised and "The Ringleader" is underweigh to Port Harvey to spend the night.
"Mary's Promises III" comes in and anchors a few hundred yards to the north of "The Ringleader", after she is securely hooked to the bottom of Port Harvey's anchorage.
The owner retires to her stateroom suite. Captain Terry, goes over cruising manual, operation manuals, then gets into his book given to him by a past owner employer, that owned a 75' Hatteras that was sold 2 weeks after Captain Terry was hired to captain it. The book is "Vancouver's Discovery of Puget Sound". Written by Edmond S. Meany in 1907. Meany was the 1st History Department Chairman for the University of Washington.

Weather was good; supplies, provisions, parts and equipment onboard; communication (mails both e and snail) engine checks made a trip to the fuel dock to top off the fuel tanks. Then "The Ringleader" was ready for her next leg of the cruise to Tuna Cove which is 46 1/4 nautical miles northwest of Campbell River.
The first challenge is to make through Seymour Narrows at high slack tide. Seymour narrows is where in the early 1950's the largest non- nuclear explosion on earth happened when Ripple Rock was tunneled to from shore then up to the rock, loaded with explosives, then blown up, to reduce the navigation hazard it caused being in the middle of Seymour Narrows, where many boats and ships went down due to the vast quantities of water having to pass through twice a day during the tidal exchanges. Causing tidal whirlpools and rips with a current sometimes exceeding 10-12 knots. Seymour Narrows is 7 3/4 nautical miles from Discovery Marina, about 1 hr at 8kts.

This was done in perfect timing, and the ebb tide then helped carry "The Ringleader" towards it's destination. After Seymour Narrows it was north to Chatham Point turn to port into Johnston Straights that leads to Queen Charlotte Straights and then the Pacific Ocean. Along the way in Race passage a pod of Orcas, or Killer Whales, cruised by close as if checking out "The Ringleader", then proceeded in the direction that "The Ringleader" had come from in search of food or other Orcas.
Tuna Cove was found the anchor was lowered then backed down on and set into the bottom secured for the evening and night.

This time was spent in Campbell River getting provisions, supplies, parts, and equipment, while the owner received administrative and personal communication from her home, and office.
Campbell River is the 3rd largest town on Vancouver Island, bills itself as the salmon capital of the world. and a major timber/ logging center too. It is half way up the inside of Vancouver Island, and has good transportation, communication, shopping centers for supplies, all within walking distance of a new marina named Discovery Marina, with wireless internet facilities.
Campbell River is the jumping off place going north, the next place with near comparable facilities is Prince Rupert just south of the Alaskan Canadian boarder.

As the Parade forms up and starts marching through down town Comox, in the continuation of the celebration of "Nautical Days", Captain Terry unties "The Ringleaders"
mooring lines to the dock, and the owner maneuvers her new boat from Marina, out into the bay, through the channel to pass over the Comox bar, around Cape Lazo where the Canadian Coast Guard and Air Force have Bases set up, and north to Campbell River, which is 33 nautical miles north of Comox.
When they enter Discovery passage no moorage was available for the time wanted at April Point Marina, a fishing Lodge with a fine mega yacht marina. Moorage was secured at Discovery Marina at the end of E dock E-61 in Campbell river.
The town of Campbell river was almost empty of people, due to the holiday. Only a few restaurants and the grocery store were open, most of the people went south to Comox for the festivities of Nautical Days, and the fireworks tonight.

After securing "The Ringleader" to the Port of Comox dock Capt. Terry talks with the Harbormaster ( Called Wharffinger), about the power situation, running of generator, and about local Happenings. The Wharffinger explains that it is a national holiday and Comox is having it's Nautical days, music dancing in the port park, pancake feed with car show and parade tomorrow.
Capt. Terry returns to "The Ringleader", relates his information to the owner who is sitting on the aft deck reading and visiting with other dockside boaters. She says she is fine and Capt is free to explore shore based activities.
Hearing this he goes ashore to find the band playing old fashion rock and roll and the locals dancing their socks off. He too joins in and shakes a leg both of them.
The next day he goes to the pancake feed, the car show, but misses the parade because the owner is anxious to leave Comox and go to the next port, that being Campbell River 33 nautical miles north of Campbell River.

Capt Terry washes the "Ringleader", reads books and manuals about her equipment and operation, checks his email at the resort hotels guest computer station. Receives a phone call request to help bring back from Alaska an 80ft boat but declines because of being currently involved with the "Ringleader" shakedown.
The Owner is ready to move on the next day, they both decide to stop at Comox for the next night 44 Nautical Miles from Schooner Cove. North along the west side of Vancouver Island past French Creek Chrome Island, then into Baynes Sound where Comox sits on the north end of a 4 to 6 hours trip pending on the engine speed the boat is cruised at. Moorage is arranged via cell phone conversation with the harbormaster. The boat is secured. and there is music being played on shore.

The owner tells Capt. Terry after studying the cruising manuals onboard that she wants to go to either Nanaimo or Schooner cove north of Telegraph Cove. Capt. Terry explains that to do this "The Ringleader" must be at Dodd Narrows, 13.5KM north at the time of slack water in the narrows. That is worked out from tide and current tables, then the speed that the boat is going to run at is divided by the distance to the Narrows (13.5), that gives the time to the Narrows minus when it to be slack, and that give the departure time from Telegraph Cove.
All works out well, then the owner chooses to go to Schooner cove another 18KM north of Dodd Narrows.

Upon starting "The Ringleader" and it's electronic navigation aids, it is determined that the depth finder is not working.
They cast off and go out into Boundary pass to make phone inquiries to the Nordic Tug Company and the electronic
equipment providers. It is decided that if "The Ringleader" returns to Anacortes they will replace the unit. Capt Terry suggested that they anchor on the other side of South Pender In Port Browning, where they can depart at the crack of dawn the next day and do a round trip to Anacortes for parts and repairs. It is agreed and " The Ringleader proceeds to and anchors in 30 feet of water at Port Browning located between North and South Penders just north of Boundary Pass.

The next morning Capt. Terry arranges a mooring slip at the Poets Cove Resort Marina, and the owner makes the first small scratch on her new boats gelcoat as she doesn't read the cross current right. She is devastated, Capt Terry tells her it is only a small scratch, it happens, good to get it over earlier, and learn from it.
He spends the rest of the day reading boat equipment manuals and familiarizing himself with ship systems. The owner reads her book and enjoys the resort facilities. They both buy Canadian fishing licenses.

The last week in July Capt. Terry was contacted by the owner of a brand new 52' Nordic Tug "The Ringleader", she was referred to him by a friend of a friend to help her on a shakedown cruise up the inside of Vancouver Island, serving as captain, guide, instructor, mate,deck hand and guest as she learn to master her new boat.

For the second year. Asst. Chief Darien Reid, from Camano Island fire and Rescue conducted a 16hr Surface Water Rescue Techinician Class for San Island EMT,s and Friday Harbor Town Firefighters. Part of the class was that the students spend 10 min in the cold water. This gave them a first hand experiance on how the water in Puget Sound affects the human body.

After sixweeks in the Bellingham Seaview North boat yard, making a custom exhaust extension to remove the un-wanted vibrations caused by the propeller catching the exhaust. Capt Terry gives the yard a hand launching "S'wells" the current boat he is captaining for a private owner.

Instructor for both sail and power operations and navigation for many Charter boat companies. Captain on various types of whalewatching nature excursion vessels.
